Final Years

einstein papersIt's been said that much of Einstein's adult life and final years were
spent in solitude, as his intellectual interests required of him. He loved
classical music and continued to play the violin throughout his life.  In his
later years, he once played with the Julliard Quartet in Princeton.

He was married twice, and his second wife died in 1936.  Einstein went on
to live alone for nearly twenty more years.  Finally on April 17, 1955 he was
hospitalized with an aortic aneurism.  He is quoted as refusing treatment and
saying: "I have done my share.  It is time to go.  I will do it elegantly."1

Even in his final days in the hospital, he continued to work on his calculations
for a unified field theory.  Dr. Thomas Harvey, the pathologist that performed
the autopsy, apparently decided (without consulting the family) to embalm and
keep Einstein's brain.  Claiming it had value to the scientific community, he kept
it and reportedly distributed slices of it to researchers for many years.

einstein socks

Einstein didn't like to wear socks!  In a personal letter he admitted that even in formal situations he got away with not wearing socks by "hiding the fact underneath tall boots"!
