Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen
1845 - 1923

Germany

Munich University, Munich, Germany

"in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable rays subsequently named after him"
-----------------------------------------------
On November 8, 1895 Wilhelm Röntgen first observed that an unindentified radiation from an evacuated glass bulb through which he was passing high-voltage electric current caused a glow in a little barium platinocyanide screen lying on the bench. In the weeks to follow, Röntgen determined most of the characteristics of these x-rays and methodically set them down in a paper "On a New Kind of Rays, a Preliminary Communication". It was published in January of 1896 in the Sitzungsberichte.

He did not patent his apparatus nor seek finacial gain from his discovery.
