Gabriel Lippmann
1845 - 1921

France

Sorbonne University, Paris, France

"for his method of reproducing colours photographically based on the phenomenon of interference"
-----------------------------------------------
In his brief Nobel lecture at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Lippmann described his method of producing photographs in natural colors: 'A plate covered with sensitive photographic layer is placed in a holder containing mercury. During the exposure the mercury is in contract with the sensitive layer, forming a mirror. After the exposure the plate is developed in the usual manner. When it is dry the colors appear, seen by reflection, and are permanent.
