Van der Waals acknowledged inspiration from an 1857 paper by Clausius on the kind of motion we call heat. A gas is pictured as consisting of a myriad of material points bouncing about at great speed. Van der Waals' idea of continuity was that there is no essential difference between gaseous and liquid states of matter.
