Lenard is chiefly known for his pioneering work on cathode rays. Herz showed in 1892 thta these rays could pass through thin metal foil. Lenard, Hertz's assistant, made a cathode-ray tube with a 'Lenard window' through which he obtained outside the tube a beam of cathod rays.
