There are layers to the surface of the sun. The first is the
Photosphere. This is lowest part of the outside shell of the sun.
This is the part of the Sun that people on Earth normally see when they
stare up at the sun.
The pressure here is actually less than that of Earth. Being
about 1/10 that of Earth's atmosphere.
The photosphere is also very thin. Being only 500km thick.
The next layer up from the Photosphere is the Chromosphere.
This is a sphere that can only be seen with a telescope that uses
filters,
a spectrometer or during a full solar eclipse. During the eclipse
the red out flaring of light or prominences
is actually the visible part
or the chromosphere. Also the temperature of the Chromosphere is
hotter than that of the Photosphere. The temp is about 20,000* C
where
the Photosphere is about 6000* C.
