The Unmanned Missions

After the tragic death of the 3 astronauts during a flight test for the Apollo I mission
The entire program went into several testing missions.
Apollo mission I - VI  were unmanned missions that tested out and made sure
that several of the key systems in the rocket and space craft were safe
to use.
Apollo II was used to test out the heat shield of the
Command Module during reentry.  It also server as a test
of over all rocket stability and safety.
After these 6 missions the first manned Apollo space mission
was given the go ahead
