Pollution Laws

The Pollution Prevention Act ( 42 U.S.C. §13101 et seq. (1990) ) focuses on source reduction, which is a set of practices that reduce the release of hazardous pollutants from sources. This is unlike waste management or pollution control, which focus on removing hazardous materials after they have been released into the environment by ways of recycling, treatment, or disposal. Practices for source reduction include "equipment or technology modifications, process or procedure modifications, reformulation or redesign of products, substitution of raw materials, and improvements in housekeeping, maintenance, training, or inventory control" according to the Environmental Protection Agency's overview of the Pollution Protection Act.14 This is important for reducing pollution before it is already negatively impacting the environment.
