Why Failures
of the Standard Model over the triumphs of General
and Special Relativity, recent discoveries in human
evolution, advancements in stem cell research, or one of
many other success stories in science?
First of all, ingenious advancements,
bold (*yet successful) theories, and shocking scientific
discoveries all invite a sense of satisfaction and
accomplishment for the knowledge hungry in the same way a
great opera or a 39 kilometer sky dive can have one
applauding out of his/her seat. Science has given us
no less of an impressive list (in both quantity and
genius); but where sports and the arts can give us only a
sense of determination in failure, failures in science can
spur our imagination to its limits.
I choose a shortcoming in science
rather than a success story because the failures are where
the greatest minds have always been drawn to, where the
most potential for change lies. For those whose
sense of inquiry has not been supplanted by
willful ignorance, encountering the strange and unfamiliar
is a pleasant and intriguing experience.
