Size and weight of a wind turbine
The massive size of a wind turbine is important because with its height and weight it can generate a lot of electricity because of how much ground it covers. This means more kinetic energy can be converted into the electricity.
Industrial wind turbines can get to be around 300-400 feet tall with blades that span over 100 feet and the tower can be over 200 feet depending on the model that is being used. You can imagine something that big has to weigh a lot. The average weight of a wind turbine is about 200 tons in total. The blades weigh about 35 tons, the tower itself at around 70 tons, and the gear box weighing at about 55 tons. The tallest wind turbine on land is 809 feet tall (including the blades) and it was built in Gaildorf, Germany. The worlds tallest wind turbine is expected to be 853 feet tall and is projected to start being built in 2021 and it will be built offshore. It will generate enough electricity for 16,000 homes. |
