Where did the nickname come from?
I
would like to address one common question that
many
people inevitably have, "where does the name God Particle come from?". As it turns out it was just by chance that it got it's name. The
name came from the
working title of a book written by Leon Lederman. In an interview
regarding the book prior to release the used the term
"God Particle" in their title and it stuck. The media saw the phrase
as a good way to catch people's attention so they used
it. Lederman later said that he gave the Higgs Boson
that nickname because "the publisher wouldn't let us
call it the Goddamn Particle, thought that might
have been a more appropriate title, given its
villainous nature and the expense it is causing".
