Brief Biography:



  • 1868, July 4th - Born in Lancaster,  Massachusetts

  • 1892 - Graduated with a bachelor's degree from Radcliffe College; The Society for the Collegiate Instruction for Women.

  • 1893 - Began working at Harvard College Observatory as a human computer. Initially as a volunteer, she was eventually hired full time as the head of the department of photographic stellar photometry (Byers). She was paid for 0.25 ¢/hr.

  • 1908 - Discovered the period-luminosity relation for Cepheid variable stars.

  • 1921, December 12th  - Died of cancer at the age of 53.
