A second possibility for rogue wave generation is the superposition of two different wave signals to produce a short-lived wave of large amplitude. The figure below shows how a dispersive wave train, imposed on a non-uniform background of smaller waves could temporarily create a single large wave. Waves like the one at the top of the figure are generated in large wave tanks used for testing ship design but it is unclear how a wave with these characteristics could be generated by a natural process. http://www.math.uio.no/~karstent/waves/index_en.html |
