Much like the once mythical giant squid, mariners' tales of monstrous waves persisted for years, and were largely dismissed as tall tales, before recent evidence was able to conclusively prove their existence.

For  decades, there had been speculation that unusually large waves had been responsible for a number of unexplained shipping disasters, notably, the unexplained loss of the MS München with all hands in 1978.

The first confirmed observation of a rogue wave was the so-called "Draupner Wave", a single wave of nearly 30m, which was measured by laser sensor on the Draupner oil platform in the North Sea, on New Year's Day, 1995.
