The non-linear S.-E. has many solutions.  Under the right conditions, so-called "breather" waves can develop.  In a regular and near uniform wave sequence, one peak can absorb wave energy from its neighbors and grow much larger than the background waves.  The figure below shows the evolution of such a wave distribution with one peak gaining significant amplitude from nearby peaks (time evolution is bottom to top):
