Benjamin Franklin experimented with lightning to develop the lightning rod to protect tall and/or secluded structures from being damaged by lightning strikes. In his experiments, Franklin found that there were two different kinds of electric charges, he named them positive and negative charges. A lightning rod is made of highly conductive metal to attract any lightning strikes near the structure. When struck by lightning, the charge that the rod receives is sent safely to the ground by a wire to dissipate the electricity.

Lightning Rods protect nearby electrical components from potential shorts.
