There are many versions of unicorns in history around the
world. Unicorns were
first described in the western world by Greek historians. They believed
they lived in India and that they were a type of Indian donkey. One account
said that the horn was a cubit (~52.5 cm) and a half and was red (from
the blood of course), black (dried blood), and
white. Other descriptions have it akin to a
rhinoceros and later a horse.
Much of what we think of as a unicorn comes from the Middle Ages and Renaissance; things
like the healing
properties of the horn and how only a virgin girl can touch
it.
In the East there is the Chinese Qilin and the Japanese
kirin. The Qilin
is called the Chinese Unicorn but really doesn’t look
like one to
westerners. It is a type of chimera with body of a tiger,
head of a dragon,
scales of a fish, the tail of a lion and a horn or two. The
Japanese kirin
is more deer-like than the western unicorn but otherwise
similar.
