The Physics Of Figure Skating

A Cut Above The Rest

In the 1952 Winter Olympic Games, Austrian skater Helmult Seibt attempted to match champion Dick Button's then-new triple loop jump by installing springs in his right skate.

Since springs need to be initially compressed to have stored potential energy to release later, Seibt needed a way to discreetly compress his right blade. Sadly, he tried to do this using his bare hands while waiting to preform his program. The unexpected release of the spring during this process amputated three of Seibt's fingers.
