- Hahn and Fritz Strassman first experimented with
splitting an uranium atom
- Meitner was brought in to assist in explaining the
appearance of barium and krypton during the splitting.
- Meitner and Frisch, in 1934, worked together to explain how the nucleus of the atom could be split into smaller elements with the release of neutrons and energy.
- This is when Meitner realized that Albert
Einstein's equation, E=mc2, applied directly to the
research her and her colleagues were working on.
- The energy that was released was the conversion of mass into energy
- Hahn and Strassmann went on to write a manuscript in 1938 explaining their findings.
- Meitner did not know that what she had discovered would soon be used to make nuclear weapons and she said she had no part in the use of atomic bombs.
- She was never mentioned in this manuscript therefore she never received any credit for assisting in the overall experiment
