That is an excellent question that was much more fun to research experimentally rather than research theoretically. For this experiment the researchers used water from a fountain, a everyday straw, and their bodies.

Results
The testing proved that imitating a water fountain is in fact quite challenging. We had trouble creating a thorough stream of water. The water in the vertical fountain test was often accompanied with a lot of air. The few times the water stream was solid, it only made it to disappointing heights. I would not drink out of water fountains like us.
