ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Respecting the environment

Whenever an industrial process happens in an undeveloped area, it is important to understand what impact may occur because of that process. For that reason, normal procedures usually include an enviromnental impact study prior to any activity. During these studies, characteristics of the area can be determined. Is it a wet lands area? What kind of wildlife lives there. Finding out as much as possible about the environment prevents costly changes in the field and keeps the footprint to a minimum. By implementing technological advances and applying sound scientific principals, we can take care of our resources and maximize the benefits they offer.

Protecting the environment

Using advanced processes in the development and operation of oil drilling, industry leaders are able to keep spills from occurring, contain the ones that do occurr and minimize the waste and byproducts which are produced by drilling. Using new methods such a thermal extraction, inert gas insertion and microbial processes, further enhance the effectiveness and quantity of resources produced. New developments in technology could only be possible with the continuing efforts of science. Innovative thinking and better equipment make exploration safer and more profitable. The benefits of science go further beyond the drilling and recovery of our resources. As technology advances, we use our resources wisely. Better engines(smaller with higher compression and horsepower ratings), cleaner fuels(refined and oxygenated gas) and alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind generation are all examples of how applying physics helps to protect our environment.

Restoring the environment

After exploration, what do we leave behind? Hopefully a scene similar to this. It is important that we clean up after ourselves. But the results of poor management can often have disaterous ramifications. Heavy metals, contaminated water, contaminated soils, human trash and unwanted equipment often litter the landscape. Sometimes the harm is less apparent. Contaminates in the ecosystem can lead to decreased populations of certain species of wildlife and enormous costs to clean up afterward. For offshore based operations, we are now using decommissioned rig equipment to build artificial reefs as habitats for fish and mamals. This trend to leave the environment better than it was when discovered is gaining popularity and the support of many governments worldwide.
