Introduction:

Well first off what is a starburst galaxy anyway?

A starburst galaxy is a galaxy that has a immense star forming activity. Sometimes the activity can take more then ten million years! That may seem like a long time to us but to a billion year old galaxy that’s nothing.

Scientists are not quiet sure why starbursts occur but they do have a theory. Scientists have come to the hypothesized that starburst are created by close encounters or perhaps a collision with another galaxy. When a collision or an encounter occurs it sends shock waves rushing through the galaxy. The shock waves push huge clouds of gas and or dust, thus causing them to collapse and form hundreds of new baby stars. The stars energy is quickly used and they explode as a supernova, thus causing more stars to be born. Then the chain reaction of a star formation and supernovas go through the central region of the galaxy this is where most of the gas is. Finally when most of the gas is used up the starburst goes away.
