Niagara Power Plant
"If you only knew the magnificence of the 3,
6 and 9, then you would have a key to the universe." -
Nikola Tesla
- Since his
childhood, Tesla wanted to find a way to use the power
of the great natural wonder- Niagara Falls. And in late
1893, his dream finally became reality, when he got the
contract to create a powerhouse and use his recently
developed induction generators for generating a
electricity for Buffalo City. After five years of hard
work and investing a lot of money by several of the
wealthiest men in America and Europe, the project
approached its completion
- When the power plant was
started, the first power reached Buffalo at midnight,
November 16, 1896. Within a few years the number of
generators at Niagara Falls reached the planned 10, and
power lines were electrifying not just Buffalo but also
the big New York City.
- "We have many a monument of past ages;
we have the palaces and pyramids, the temples of the
Greek and the cathedrals of Christendom. In them is
exemplified the power of men, the greatness of nations,
the love or art and religious devotion. But the monument
of Niagara has something of its own, more in accord with
our present thoughts and tendencies. It is a monument
worthy of our scientific age, a true monument of
enlightenment and of peace. It signifies the subjugation
of natural forces to the service of man, the
discontinuance of barbarous methods, the relieving of
millions from want and suffering" - Nikola Tesla's
speech at the opening ceremony of the hydroelectric
power station, January 12, 1897.
