History of the Loudspeaker
The first form of loudspeaker did not
use electricity. This device used a horn to amplify sound
. This type of speaker was created by Thomas Edison and
was created around 1880. For the time this was
revolutionary but not very practical. This version of the
loudspeaker did not produce very much sound.
The first person to come up with the
idea of an electromagnetic speaker was a man named Werner
Von Siemens. He came up with a design that used a coil to
amplify the sound. Due to the times lack of knowledge
about sound and electricity, Siemens had no way of
creating this device.
In 1924 the first successful design of
the modern electrodynamics was created. This design was
created by two men named Chester W. Rice and Edward
Washburn Kellogg. This design consisted of a moving coil
that significantly raised sound quality and volume. This
loudspeaker design was sold in stores under the name
"Radiola."
Since then many different types of
speakers have been made but many still use the designs
made by these men.
