Rope

The most iconic part of climbing is the rope. Climbing rope is high quality dynamic nylon. The most important part is that it is dynamic. Dynamic rope stretches when you put force on it, this reduces the impact felt by climbers wen they fall.

As the rope stretches the time that it takes the falling climber to come to a halt increases. The longer that it takes to stop falling the less force that the person, and just as importantly, the less for the equipment feels. If you fall on something that doesn't stretch it takes multiple times the amount of force and is likely to snap. The video below is what happens if you take a fall onto a non-stretch sling.

Not good. However in this link we see some climbers taking falls on dynamic ropes. Look at how softly they come to a stop. Yes they fall further but they don't break any of their equipment and fall off the wall.
