Now that we know the science of these lights, you may be wondering where you can find these great lights, wonder no further. Auroras usually occur in ring-shaped areas about 2500 miles in diameter around the magnetic poles on earth. These rings are nearly mirrored reflections of each other and are called auroral ovals. The northern ring passes through central Alaska and Canada, Greenland, northern Scandinavia, and Russia. Being here in Fairbanks puts us in a great location to see the aurora because we sit right in the middle of the auroral oval.
In order to see the aurora, you might need to leave the city lights to get a better chance of viewing them. there are quite a few places around here to view the aurora which include Cleary Summit, Chena River recreation area, and even just on the side of the road, but truly anywhere where you have a clear sky with minimal light pollution should do the trick to view the wonderful aurora.
