Pendulum
Many people have old grandfather clocks in their home that use the mechanism of a pendulum to work. By having a "driving weight" attached to a pendulum through a series of different mechanisms, the falling motion of the driving weight is what allows the pendulum to swing back and forth (scienceabc.com). However, because we don't want the weight to fall immediately, we have an oscillator (escape wheel) to regulate the frequency. Pendulums function on the conservation of energy. |
Quartz
Quartz watches function by having an electric current pass through the quartz crystal. An incredibly small quartz mineral is placed within the watch to power it. Because the quartz uses such little electricity, these watches can last several years before needing a replacement. When the current courses through the quartz, it oscillates exactly at a rate of 32,768 Hz (explainthatstuff.com). As you can see by the diagram, there is a module named "pulse generator" which is the quartz crystal. Further along, you can see the movement of the current as it translates these pulses into a method of reading time.

Mechanical
Mechanical watches function in three parts, energy, wheels and the escapement along with the oscillator. Mechanical watches are also called automatic watches. For these specific watches to function, they must be worn and used. Potential energy is stored in the spring with the copper-like color. With the winding motion providing energy in the spring, it now has spring potential energy as it continues to wind. This then serves to turn the wheels and the controller at a steady rate. The controller, AKA the oscillator, allows for the reading of time as it moves back and forth at a specific frequency (torgoen.com). |
