Special Teams

Last but not least the unsung heroes of football, the Special Teams. One position in particular makes special teams very special and that would be the punter/kicker. The kicker/punter has one of the biggest responsibilities. They are responsible for making field goals, extra points, and punting the ball deep enough to change the field position for their team.

Aerodynamics plays a role in the kicking game. The aerodynamics helps the strategies and techniques for the kicker of the ball. Newton’s third law is the best way to relate what is going on when the kicker is kicking the ball. For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force. When the kicker goes to swing his leg towards the football that is the action, the reaction to him swinging his leg toward is the footballs force pushing back and going into motion.

The kickers/punters main objective is to maximize his horizontal range and hang time, in other words he needs to maximize his projectile motion. This is shown when changing field positions on a punt. When doing this it allows for his teammates to get down the field to down the ball or make a tackle before the opposing team can bring the ball up the field.
