Skating
Skating is an essential part of hockey. In order for
players to become elite they must become very efficient
and fast at skating. The skate blade is a thin piece of
steel and the player uses this too push off into the ice
and propel forward. If a player's skates aren't
sharp enough the blade will slip due to a lack of friction
and in most cases the player will fall. When a
player is gliding there is relatively low friction between
the blade and the ice. This allows players to
maintain their speed throughout the ice surface while
exhausting very little energy. According to www.exploratorium.edu
professional hockey players can reach speeds of 32 km/hr
which is approximately 8.9 m/s. www.real-world-physics-problems.com/physics-of-hockey.html |
