Shooting
Shooting is a very exciting part of the game of hockey.  In order for players to score goals they must not only have a hard shot but also a very accurate one.  The 2 most common types of shots in hockey are the slap shot and the wrist shot.  The slap shot is the harder of the two but the drawback is less accuracy.  At the 2012 NHL All Star Competition Zdeno Chara broke the record for hardest slap shot with a shot of 108.8 mph which is 48.4 m/s.  A puck weighs just .17 kg but with a shot at that speed it would have a momentum of 8.2 N s.  The hardness of a frozen hockey puck offers very little impact time which sounds painful for a goaltender!  The elasticity and flex of the stick is what allows these players to shoot the puck at such high speeds.  A few students from Kettering University did research on the flex ratings of hockey sticks and what each stiffness is in units of N m.
