In
March 1963, Marvel Comics first introduced
what would become one of its most incredibly
iconic superheroes of the 21st century. Tony
Stark, the man behind the mask, is an
American billionaire playboy, industrialist,
and ingenious engineer. When he was 21, his
parents were killed in a car crash and he
inherited his father’s business, turning it
into a multi-billion dollar company focusing
on weaponry. On a trip to Afghanistan to
oversee one of his latest weapons, his
convoy stumbles upon a booby-trap and
shrapnel is lodged into his chest. He is
kept alive because a war lord named Wong-Chu
wished to use his genius to build more
weapons of mass destruction. Stark, along
with another captive of the name Ho Yinsen,
creates a suit in order to escape captivity.
Yinsen used his knowledge of Physics, to put
a device in Stark that kept the shrapnel
from reaching his heart. This device, after
some alterations, is later used to power the
metal suit.
In the 2008 movie, Stark escapes and returns
home, vowing to end weapon manufacturing. He
goes away from public eye to modify the pace
maker keeping him alive, as well as creates
a suit, continuously modifying and testing
throughout the film, working to produce the
most perfect and unique machine.
At the end of the movie, after a large
battle between good and evil, Stark
announces to the public that he is in fact,
the man behind the mask, and he is dubbed
the Iron Man.
