In order to understand the Natural Balance Trim, it will be useful to know the following terms and parts of a horse's foot:

  • A farrier is someone who take care of horses' feet, which grow like human fingernails and need to be regularly maintained.
  • Caudal: Closer to the tail
  • Flare: Where the hoof wall deviates out from a strait line from where the hoof wall meets the leg to its base.
  • Sound/Soundness: A sound horse is neither lame no sick.
  • Lame: A horse is lame if it tries to keep weight off of one leg.
  • The following hoof parts may be found in Figure 1:
    • frog
    • frog apex
    • frog buttress
    • bars
    • sole ridge/callus
  • Quarters: the sides of the hoof wall.
  • P-3: The coffin bone, or the main bone within the hoof. See Figure 2.
