In order to understand the Natural Balance Trim, it will be useful to
know the following terms and parts of a horse's foot:
- A farrier is
someone who
take care of horses' feet, which grow like human fingernails and need
to be regularly maintained.
- Caudal: Closer to
the tail
- Flare: Where the
hoof wall deviates out from a strait line from where the hoof wall
meets the leg to its base.
- Sound/Soundness: A
sound horse is neither lame no sick.
- Lame: A horse is
lame if it tries to keep weight off of one leg.
- The following hoof parts may be found in Figure 1:
- frog
- frog apex
- frog buttress
- bars
- sole ridge/callus
- Quarters: the sides
of the hoof wall.
- P-3: The coffin
bone, or the main bone within the hoof. See Figure 2.
