Carbon nanotubes are
a type of
Fullerene, or molecule made up entirely of carbon atoms.
Specifically, they take the shape of linked hexagonal rings of carbon
arranged in a flat sheet and connected on the edges to form long,
cylindrical tubes. The name come from their size, as the diameter of
a nanotube can be measured in single digits of nanometers (approx.
1/50,000th the width of a human hair) while, as of 2008, they have
been made as long as several millimeters. Nanotubes are generally
categorized into two types: Single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) and
multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs)
