The Physics of Drifting
Techniques:
There are many techniques that you can use to drift your vehicle. The techniques also vary according to the type of car you are using. For maximum performance in drifting, you would want a vehicle that has rear wheel drive. It is possible to drift vehicles with all-wheel drive and front wheel drive as well; it just takes more practice to perfect. Some of the most common techniques for drifting are E-brake drifting, power over drifting, and feint drifting.
*E brake drifting is when you have a FWD vehicle and pull the e brake, which will then lock your back tires. This allows your cars rear end to be pulled around the corner.
*Power over drifting is a throttle induced drift. When you are approaching a corner, you accelerate your vehicle quickly allowing the back end of your vehicle to swing around the corner. This technique is used for AWD and RWD vehicles.
*Feint drifting is when you steer your vehicle to the outside of the curve and then use the vehicles momentum to drift it around the direction of the curve. This technique is usually used for AWD and RWD vehicles as well.
This link will take you to one of Ken Block's drifting video. This video has multiple representations of the different techniques of drifting.
