Vehicle Traction is Dependent On The Type Of Vehicle Along With other Factors

A tires grip is dependent on the vertical force exerted on the tire and the coefficient of friction between that tire and the contact surface surface. The vertical force depends on the weight of the vehicle and how it has been distributed.

All vehicles are governed by Newtons second law, F=MA.

To provide the best traction on ice and snow a vehicle should have almost equal weight distribution for all four tires.

Rear wheel drive vehicles have poor handling for the engine and the majority of the weight is near the front of the vehicle. Giving very little weight and traction to the rear tires.

Front wheel drive cars have decent traction but there is very little weight in the rear causing easy fishtailing.

  • Traction Control does nothing to give your vehicle more traction, it only limits your acceleration to the ability of the tires.
  • ABS brakes also do nothing to add traction, it only disables one from locking up their tires.
