Skeptical Thinking

"It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. "
--Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan was a persistent skeptic of everything from new science research to pseudoscience nonsense. He was unusually gifted at coming up with scenarios that would make people reevaluate what they believed to be true.

“By suggesting often outlandish alternatives and challenging traditionalists to disprove them, he has inspired doubts about many accepted theories. Sagan’s role is essential for healthy science because a bandwagon effect frequently leads to premature consensus among scientists before equally plausible alternatives have even been thought of, let alone rationally rejected.”(Morrison). David Morrison is the senior scientist at the NASA Astrobiology Institute, he wrote about Sagan after his death, the two worked together on several NASA projects.

Carl authored numerous books that aimed to debunk popular believes held about strange phenomena like UFO's and crop circles. One of his most pointed books was " The Demon Haunted World" in which
he used scientific thinking to explain how such phenomena could occur, usually coming to the conclusion that it was people trying to fool the public into believing we were being visited by aliens.
