Physics Of Beer Pong

The Dimensions of an average beer pong table can be 8 by 12 feet. To calculate the initial velocity of the ball can be used by simple physics. For example, The average distance the shooter is away from the cup is about 8.0 feet  away. We can imagine that the ball is launched up at about a 30 degree angle and is released about one meter above the level of the cup.

To find the initial velocity in the vertical direction, we can use the equation:

Δy = v0 sinθ t – 1/2gt2

Where y = -1.0 m

 v0 = initial velocity

θ = 30 degrees angle of launch,

g= (-9.8m/s^2)

t= time of flight.

In the horizontal direction,  there is no horizontally directed force acting on the ball during its flight across the room. The motion equation is:

Δx = 2.4 m = v0cosθ t

 where v0cosθ is the constant horizontal component of the velocity.

Solving these equations we get v0 = 4.0 m/s, and the time of flight of the ball t = 0.70s.
