The game was created by Joe Sobek in 1950. He created the game when he decided a racket was more suitable then using your hands for handball (if anyone's played handball you know about the bruises). The game is known for being unique because when the ball is in play the player has the option to use all walls and there is no net to hinder the player. With the ability to roam the court freely, strategic thinking becomes more prevalent over skill (to an extent).
The game really took off when Robert Kendler created the IRA (international racquetball association). With Roberts past affiliation with handball he was able to promote racquetball to an established player base. With promotion and growth of the sport millions of people started playing the game. Which in turn created many courts across the USA during the 1980s. Which solidified racquetball as a legitimate sport . Though the growth of racquetball has been slowed , the game is still enjoyed and played by many across the world.
