Aurora
Borealis
To Understand the Aurora Borealis, commonly called the Norther Lights we must begin with the Sun. Charged ions leave the sun in a process often referred to as as solar wind storms (Giancoli 2005). These ions approach the Earth's atmosphere and are "guided along magnetic lines of force" and create the brilliant displays called the Northern Lights (Semeter et al. 2008).
Southern Lights
The Northern lights have a southern counter part called
the Aurora Australis which will not be discussed on this web
page.
Is the name given to the Aurora Borealis aka the
Northern Lights by the Inupiaq people of Alaska (Native
Language Center 2012).
