One Japanese belief about the Northern lights involves conceiving a child. It is a common
Japanese belief that a child conceived under the northern lights will grow up to be blessed.

   Scandinavia
One Scandinavia folklore about the northern lights describes them as being the spirits of deceased unmarried women.

    Yupi'k

I grew up out in Bethel, Alaska where the majority of the people are Yup'ik Eskimo and as a kids we were told not to whistle at the northern lights. The consequences of such actions included the lights chopping of our heads or sweeping us up into the sky.

Common Theme Surrounding the Lights

Many cultures believe the lights to be dancing beings. Eskimos lliving near the mouth of the Yukon river believe the lights to be the dancing spirits of the different animals they hunt. The Finnish believed the lights to be dancing foxes and called the lights fire foxes. While French Canadians  refer to the lights as marionettes (Legends and Folklore 2012).
