The Sixth Sense
Most of us have run into situations were the hair on the back
of our necks stands up before something unnerving happens. Are
we acutely aware of the inevitable, or is that just another
biological pathway that hasn't been discovered? Regardless,
the US Military has become keenly aware of Soldiers
development of spidey-sense on the battlefield. For those of
you whom are laughing, it's a real thing! According to
the U.S. Office of Naval Research, "humans can detect and act
on unique patterns without consciously and intentionally
analyzing them" (LiveScience.com, 2012). With this, the military hopes to develop this same mindset in Soldiers and Marines who don't have significant combat experience in order to enhance their intuition in austere environments. And by doing so, "A soldier may see, smell or hear something that gets subconsciously organized within hundreds of milliseconds to create the feeling or impression of a solution leading up to a sudden insight about the battlefield situation" (LiveScience.com, 2012).
