In this report we have explored nuclear fission, seen the effects of it when it is used for a weapon, but we have also seen it as new and wonderful power source.  We have explored some of the history behind the nuclear and fusion weapons. We have looked at thermonuclear bombs and seen how destructive they could be, if ever there were a nuclear war. But we have also seen how the very force that could destroy every living thing on the face of the world, could also supply the world with a virtually limitless supply of power . Although the Cold War is now a distant memory, the threat of a nuclear holocaust did not die with the fall of the Soviet Union. The rise of global terrorism poses an even greater threat than the Soviet Union did 20 years ago. Unlike the leaders of the communist regimes, the terrorists are not rational thinkers. The idea of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) kept the “Commies” from starting WWIII. Now that the threat of “rouge” nations has been brought into the spotlight, people are beginning to realize that there are fanatics, willing to die, if it means that all “unbelievers” die with them. Although we cannot put the nuclear genie back in the bottle, we can build an effective defense against it. And after the events of September 11, we must!
