Introduction

There are four states of matter in everyday life around us -- Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma. Matter will maintain different unique properties depending on the state at which it is in. "Historically, the distinction is made based on qualitative differences in properties (Lumen)." A fluid is a substance which has no fixed shape and is easily adjusted by external pressure.

Fluids are typically classified as a liquid or a gas. While the word fluid and liquid are often used interchangeably it is important to know the differences. All liquids are a fluid, but not all fluids are a liquid. "To give you an example, Nitrogen gas is a fluid, whereas a mango juice is both a fluid and a liquid (Byjus)." Through the next few pages we will dive deeper into the interesting concepts that follow fluids such as fluid analysis, the unique properties of non-newtonian fluids, and smart fluids.
