Corrective Eye Surgery

The most well know application of the
chirped pulse amplification technology that Strickland and Mourou pioneered is laser surgery. One type of laser surgery that is performed often is corrective eye surgery. Most vision problems are caused by an irregularity in the shape of a person's cornea, the part of the eye that focuses light in the back of the eye. This laser can make the precise micro-cuts necessary to correct the shape of the cornea, a task that is very hard for the human hand to do with equal precision.

Strickland and Mourou's laser allows for incredibly small and precise cuts to be made in machinery. The photo to the far left is a photo of a micro-chip what was engraved with a laser that utilizes the
chirped pulse amplification technology. The photo to the right of the micro-chip shows a precise pattern carved into a metal alloy. The precision and clean cuts are achieved using the Strickland's laser.
