How electric motors work

Put simply, electric motors are machines which convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. Though other types exist, this mechanical energy is in the form of continuous rotation. There are many different types and sizes of electrical motor, but they all work by the same principals of electromagnetic force, which is known as Lorentz Force. “This force law governs the interaction of charged particles with electromagnetic fields:

f=q(e+v*b)

• An electric field exerts a force on any charged particle.
• A magnetic field exerts a force on a moving charged particle.”(Knight, 899)
