In the combustion chamber, fuel is sprayed into the compressed air and then ignited. After initial ignition, the combustion sustains itself until there is no longer any fuel supplied to the air. Depending on the engine, the air in this chamber can reach temperatures well over 2000 degrees Celsius. Because the temperature of the air inside the chamber can be significantly higher than the melting point of the materials that make up the engine, the cooler, unignited air that was bled off during the compression stage is pumped through parts of the chamber to cool the materials. The ignited air begins expanding rapidly and forces its way further along in the engine, into the turbine.
