Minerals are important to the development of modern society. Unfortunately, the majority of mineral deposits are located under the surface of the earth. Luckily, we have the lovechild of geology and physics, geophysics.
What is geophysics?
Geophysics is the study of the physical properties of minerals. Each type of mineral has very distinct characteristics, such as color, hardness, density, and magnetism. If the mineral is concentrated in a large enough quantity, some of these characteristics become anomalous, or not normal, and can be detected through geophysical methods.

Why is geophysics important?
Geophysical exploration is the ultimate treasure hunt which results in the benefit of all of mankind. Because the majority of surface deposits have been discovered, geophysics and the continual development of geophysical technology is imperative to the advancement of civilization.
