The string tension acts as shown in the above diagram. Every point on the string propagates a pulling force to the two ends. This deforms the bow. For more on why this deformation is important see Restorative Forces

There are two tensile forces that occur frequently in archery. The tensile force in the string of the bow and the tensile forces in the muscles of the archer. Because human anatomy is a complex system lets examine only the tension in the string.
