Applications of Acoustic Levitation

So other than being a cool science experiment, what can this technology be used for one might ask? This is where it gets cool.

How about suspending droplets of fluids to be observed and studied without the presence of surface contacts?

How about building microchips and other very small electronic devices by using sound waves to move and place parts onto the board accurately rather than a robotic actuator?

How about transporting and containment of extremely corrosive chemicals and materials?

Non-contact transport of objects using acoustic levitation can and is being done today with objects up to 10 kg as described in a journal article written by Sadayuki Ueha, Yoshiki Hashimoto, and Yoshikazu Koike.

Journal reference: Ultrasonics, DOI: 10.1016/S0041-624X(99)00052-9

Indeed all of these things can be done by using this technology, and we will keep finding new ways to apply this technique as a unique solution to problems both worldwide and in space.

Awesome YouTubes on Acoustic Matter Manipulation!

Here is a link to a YouTube video of grains of sand making patterns based on frequency! www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvJAgrUBF4w

And here is one of acoustic levitation in two dimensions! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd9DgsI95hc

And this one is my personal favorite, showing the different kinds of harmonic oscillations you can perform on a drop of water: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z4QdiqP-q8
