Located in California, the Golden Gate Bridge connects the
northern tip of San Francisco to Marin County. After taking four years
to construct, and losing twelve men in the
construction process, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to
traffic on May 28, 1937. At
this time the bridge was the world’s longest and tallest
suspension bridge. Still standing today, nearly 80 years
later, the bridge is considered to be one of the greatest
engineering achievements of all times. It is also
recognized as a symbol of the United States. According to Frommers travel
guide, it is “ possibly the most beautiful, and certainly
the most photographed, bridge in the world.”
